Living and experiencing public transport
Friendliness in public transport is everybody’s business. All day, every day. This is why our travellers are regularly reminded of the rules of courtesy through a campaign aiming at mutual respect.
The campaign themes vary each year. As our target, our travellers provide the best insights on the matter. This is why we often draw inspiration from your suggestions. Consequently, we added two new guidelines besides offering your seat and letting travellers alight before boarding a vehicle: remove your backpack at peak times and moderate the volume of your music and phone calls. This does not take away from our other guidelines, such as not eating or drinking in our vehicles or spreading evenly in the vehicles to free up the passage near the doors. To read all our guidelines, go to the Traveller’s guide.

Lower the volume
Do you like to unwind during your journey? You are not the only one. Whether you like to catch up on your favourite soap or enjoy the latest hits, don’t forget your ear buds. If you happen to take phone calls, bear in mind to mute your speakers and speak softly. This way, all travellers can read their book, review their lessons, or simply take a moment and enjoy a peaceful journey.
Remove your backpack
Being squeezed by two backpacks or more... Sounds familiar? Students, globetrotters or business travellers: remove your backpack or hold it whenever the vehicle is busy. This will free up space for other travellers and help everyone access the doors and seats.
Offer your seat
Imagine being seated and seeing an elderly person, a traveller with crutches or a pregnant lady boarding the vehicle. Be courteous and give them your seat. By helping and being aware of others around you, you might even be rewarded with a lovely smile...
Alighting before boarding
Let fellow travellers alight before you board a vehicle. This way, the vehicle will leave more quickly. You also avoid jostling and everyone will arrive more swiftly at their destination.
STIB-MIVB wishes to offer you the best transport experience in Brussels. To do so, we need your help so that everyone can enjoy a smooth and comfortable journey, whether by bus, tram or metro.
Thank you!
